A descendant of ancient noble Italian lineage, Gherardo Scapinelli di Léguigno is the son of decorated Navy officer Giorgio Scapinelli and Francesca Ivancich, renowned painter and sister of Adriana, who was the inspiration behind Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea and for whom the author wrote Across the River and into the Trees.
Gherardo graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice before serving several years aboard a Destroyer. He travelled the world for years working on oil rigs, then headed up the field office of a well-known international assistance organization before founding a hazardous materials transportation company in Greece. He is an accomplished sailor and among the first instructors to teach at the Sailing Centre of Caprera.
He speaks English, French, Spanish and Greek and lives in Como, Venice and Sardinia. He enjoys off-roading in Africa, studying World War II and Metaphysics.
